Introduced in 1986, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) is still renowned for its engineering integrity and superb build quality. A monocoque chassis design equipped with beautifully balanced coil-sprung suspension (wishbone front / multi-link rear), nicely weighted power-assisted steering and responsive four-wheel disc brakes, it was propelled by a generous selection of petrol and diesel engines. Available in saloon, estate, coupe and convertible guises, the vast majority were specified with automatic transmission. An early flagship for the range, the 300CE exhibited notably sure-footed handling thanks to its forward-biased 53:47 weight distribution. Credited with 177bhp and 188lbft of torque, its 2962cc SOHC straight-six powerplant reputedly enabled the pillarless four-seater to accelerate from 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds and onto 137mph. Belying its performance potential, the two-door coupe was blessed with elegant yet understated styling and a cosseting interior.
Finished in red with black upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment), "very good" (engine, automatic transmission), "unmarked" (interior trim, paintwork) or "immaculate" (bodywork) condition. Said to have had "three owners from new" and to possess "service history up to 82,000 miles" (the current odometer reading is apparently circa 90,800), 'H957 LOV' is further understood to have had "eleven of its thirteen services carried out by Mercedes-Benz main dealers". Judged by the seller to be "undoubtedly among the best examples available" and to "drive with no known faults", this smart 300CE is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until March 2009.
