Harley Davidson introduced their new large capacity over head valve vee twin for the 1966 season. The new model featured cylinder heads similar in style to those previously employed on the smaller Sportster models which quickly led to the new engine being dubbed the "Shovelhead". Thanks to the revised cylinder heads improved breathing characteristics the 1207cc or 73.7cubic inch engine delivered an increase in output of 5bhp to 60bhp when compared to the previous Panhead designs 55 bhp. The new engine would remain in production for the next 14 years in its original capacity with a 80 cubic inch (1340cc) variant being added for 1978. The Shovelhead was finally replaced in 1980 having served Harley Davidson and their customers well, powering many of the company's most iconic models of the period including the Electra Glide and the FX Super Glide. The new engine drew heavily on the previous versions design but offered two significant improvements over its predecessor being rubber mounted and offering a five speed gearbox.

This example was recently imported from the United States and is offered Vat and Duty paid in the UK. The machine, which is attractively presented with red paintwork and an abundance of brightwork, is described by the vendor as "running fine" and has recently been looked over by a Harley mechanic. It displays only 21,918 miles on the odometer.
